PLAYGROUND RELOCATION

Recommendations from the 2021 Fort Williams Park Master Plan include the relocation of the aging playground from its current location near parking lots to a setting adjacent to the Children’s Garden. Installed in 2016 by the Friends of Fort Williams Park (FFWP), the 1.5-acre Children’s Garden is a landscape designed to let children and adults explore nature through play, discovery, and wonder. Features include paths, bridges, a biofilter pond, a small woodland, and a wildflower meadow.

The Town of Cape Elizabeth has invested in the construction of the new playground. With the hardscape structure work complete, the project now transitions to our stewardship work of planting for beauty, shade, wildlife, and learning.

Soon, you will see trees that will offer lasting beauty and much needed protective canopy, helping to create a more comfortable and inviting place for all to gather. Just as importantly, the trees and additional plantings will provide vital habitat for birds and other wildlife, reinforcing the Friends’ commitment to ecological health and long-term stewardship.

Funding for this project is in part supported by a matching Project Canopy Assistance Grant. However, community support remains welcome. With over $7,000 invested thus far on over 100 native trees and shrubs, planting will begin August 21st, with additional plantings and work to continue in September. Gifts of any size help us plant more trees, increase biodiversity, and care for the park in ways that benefit children, families, and the broader community.
